According to local media Fraport is ready to proceed with serious maintenance works on airport premises after 15 October. Old terminal building will be shut down to be refurbished (new air conditioning system, new electricity installments, additional baggage belts, new automated baggage handling system). For the new terminal building, baggage handling system will be upgraded.

Regarding departures, Fraport intends to abolish dedicated gate space for each flight and instead opts for the "Open Gate Concept" meaning a single huge lounge for passengers.

Works are also expected in the car and coaches parking areas outside the airport as well in the airport tarmac.

All works are anticipated to be completed by April 2019.

Regional government's "Strategic Plan for Airline Flights Development & Airport Marketing" was appointed to a private company. Plan includes Rhodes, Kos and Karpathos airports and is expected to be a useful tool for attracting airlines and flights according to each island needs while we also expect it to focus on attracting AT LAST winter flights. Plan will also probably suggest a framework for cooperation between local government and Fraport.
